Professional Devopment
Early in my career with Euclid High School the emphasis was creating small-schools out of a large high school with a building grant from The Knowledge Works Foundation. The small-school I helped to plan and develop focused on interpersonal and intellectual development. Much of professional development focused on incorporating conflict resolution, mediation, student mentoring, peer tutoring, Challenge Day participation, and Critical Friends groups. As the district moved on from the small-schools initiative technology resources became available and professional development shifted to teaching and learning with technology.
Wikis
Use of wiki sites to support instruction has been one of my favorite web resources. Sites are easy to create and edit. If students are conducting guided research and first period keeps asking to clarify a question, a login and edit puts an end to answering the same question for the rest of the day! I have created wikis for professional collaboration, graduate classes, presentations, and workshops. The ability to edit from any computer was a major appeal, however I felt wikis fell short in getting students to publish. As learning management systems became available, wikis have remained useful in supporting content and learning-based projects.

Technology Grant
EHS Technology Cohort/Innovation Grant Team
Working with a cohort of teachers, we focused on the impact of technology on teaching and learning. We collected data on student learning with technology and without technology. Our conclusion was that teaching with technology did not improve student learning, however it did enhance student engagement. Research and findings were presented at the 2010 state eTech conference. |
About Me
As a graduate of Vermilion High School I had no interest in teaching history, however I was fortunate enough to have some amazing history professors that shifted my interest from social work to teaching early in my college career.
I love discovering new ways to connect young adults to history and incorporating technology, with emphasis on student creating and publishing content. As a child advocate one of my favorite history lessons to teach is The Children's March, the role of young adults and children in the Civil Rights Movement. In a district where students actively sought sources of strength many found inspiration in the voices of the young adults who marched and contributed to the end of institutionalized segregation policies in the United States. Other areas of professional interest include instructional design and technology, technology for social change, literacy, dyslexia, poverty and cognitive development, professional learning communities, C2C Economics, and women in technology. As with much of life, education is a process. In creating, developing, and maintaining a digital portfolio the value of creating a professional learning community has come to my attention. Including evidence of professional growth and reflection are additional goals to incorporate. Previous ePortfolio |
